Altador Cup

Yooyuball (YYB)

Yooyuball is a game, much like football (or soccer), in which 20 teams from lands around Neopia compete to win the coveted Altador Cup. You will play the team you've signed up for, contending with every other team in the tournament.

Yooyuball is in HTML5, and can be played on either the computer or on a mobile device.

How to Play

The goal of the game is to get the Yooyuball into the other team's goal. While you are playing for your chosen team, CPU will be playing the opposing team. An entire Yooyuball game lasts 3 minutes.

Controls

On a computer, you can control your players in two ways: either with your mouse (or trackpad) or on the keyboard. The mouse and keyboard cannot be used to control your players simultaneously. When using a mouse (or trackpad), players will be activated when you hover your cursor over your player. On your keyboard, you can either use the arrow keys or the "WASD" letters (up, left, down, right). Unlike using your mouse (or trackpad) to hover over the players you are wanting to activate, using the keyboard controls will have the game automatically select the player closest to the Yooyuball for you to control. You will know which player is activated when they have a highlighted circle around them.

On a mobile device, you must tap the player you want to activate and swipe with your finger your screen across the playing field in the direction you want to move your player. Your finger must stay down on the screen as you swipe to continue moving your player.

Stealing the Yooyuball

If the other team has the ball, you can steal the ball from them by double tapping the space bar when running at the player holding the Yooyuball. Your player will slide forward, grabbing the Yooyuball. Using a mouse, you can steal a ball by clicking nearby an opposing player with the Yooyuball.

On a mobile device, you can steal the ball by moving towards your opponent who will be holding the Yooyuball and clicking the orange Steal button. If you can steal, the button will glow from being transparent.

Kicking the Yooyuball

Making a goal is more than just having your player kick the Yooyuball. Kicking the ball will also include having a power gague to charge up their kick. When ready to kick the Yooyuball when playing on a keyboard, press the spacebar down to find a power gague appear. The bar will fill up the longer you press the spacebar down. When you're ready to kick, aim and let the spacebar go and the Yooyuball will automatically be launched away from your player. When using a mouse, hold down the left-click button to find the power gague appear. Letting go of clicking the mouse will automatically launch the Yooyuball.

On a mobile device, you can kick the Yooyuball by holding down the green Kick button. You must already have your player aimed before you click the button. Once you let go of the button, the player will automatically launch the Yooyuball.

Here is a video of what it looks like playing YYB on your mobile device.

Back to Formation

Every team has their own specific starting formation on the field. Players that are not actively being played tend to roam around the field. They sometimes can also gravitate towards any Yooyuball that are left on the ground. To reset your gameplay and keep your teammates close by, press Shift on your keyboard. All players will stop wherever they are and come back to their beginning position. This control works if you're using the keyboard or the mouse as your primary controls. There are currently no controls to bring your players back to their original formation when playing on a mobile device.

Gameplay

When you start, you must first select a side of the field that you will defend. The yellow arrow shows the way you will be running with your team to reach the goal. You can either choose left to right, or right to left.

Formations

Next, you need to choose a formation. There are three formations: 1+3, 2+2 or 3+1. Some formations are better than others dependent on your play and strategy. We highly recommend using the 1+3 formation as it's easier grabbing the Yooyuball from the middle of the field.

While you are able to choose the formation that best helps your gameplay, the CPU will default to the team's default formation. Formations that you are playing against has little effect on your gameplay.

Yooyuballs

There are seven different types of Yooyu that are randomly played in Yooyuball. Each Yooyu acts differently on the field.

Yooyuballs
Normal Yooyu

The Normal Yooyu acts as a regular ball. There's no surprises when this Yooyu comes out to play.
Fire Yooyu

When kicking and passing the Fire Yooyu, it moves quickly. You can shoot the Fire Yooyu from further away, and still have a better chance at scoring the goal. This is the easiest Yooyu to score with as it blasts past the goalkeeper quicky. If you do not have the Fire Yooyu in possession, it can be difficult to defend because of its speed.

Snow Yooyu

The Snow Yooyu moves very slowly, and can pause before it reaches any desired location. Scoring with this Yooyu can be challenging as it can give the CPU goalkeeper more time to react and block your move. We recommend moving closer to the goal at an angle before kicking the Snow Yooyuball.

Faerie Yooyu

When kicking or passing the Faerie Yooyu, it does not go down a straight path. It almost always curves, kind of like the side of a horseshoe.

Darigan Yooyu

The Darigan Yooyu is a ball that is completely unpredictable in which direction it actually goes. It can be kicked the opposite direction you intend to aim for. For example, the Darigan Yooyu can end up going backwards, or up if you're planning to kick downwards. This is one of the most difficult Yooyus to play with, and is known to kill a lot of game time.

Mutant Yooyu

The Mutant Yooyu does not have its own attribute, but instead copies either the Fire, Snow, Faerie or Darigan Yooyuballs. It changes acting like other Yooyu's after every time the Yooyu leaves a player. So if you threw the Mutant Yooyuball and it went extremely fast like the Fire Yooyuball, the next time you or your opponent gets it, it can shift to being very slow like the Snow Yooyuball.

Clockwork Yooyu

The Clockwork Yooyu acts like a regular ball. The only catch is that you have a limited amount of time to score with the Clockwork Yooyu. In about 7-10 seconds, the Yooyu will violently explode, and you will transition to a new Yooyuball.

Powerups

There are a total of four powerups that can be used within a game. Powerups appear randomly and are used the minute you run into them.

Powerups
Speed Boost

The Speed Boost will make your team members move twice their normal speed. This powerup is helpful to either avoid the other team, make your way to the goal faster, or even steal the ball from your opponent. This is the most common of the four powerups, appearing up to four or five times within a single game.
Goal Expansion

This powerup will make the opponent's goal larger.  This powerup lasts for multiple rounds, even after

Before
After
Giant Powerup

This powerup will give your players a large adventage by making them into giants. They will be able to tread across the field quickly and their kicks will become exceedingly powerful.

Freeze Opponent

Grabbing this powerup makes the other team frozen in their tracks. When the other team is frozen, you can score a goal unopposed, or even steal a Yooyuball easily from their player. The effect lasts until you either score a goal or when the ice melts in about 5-7 seconds. Additionally, when you accidentally pass the ball to a frozen opponent, that player will unfreeze immediately.

Strategies

There are several strategies when playing Yooyuball. We recommend trying out each method below to find out what works well for you.

Strategies for Normal, Snow, Fire, Mutant & Clockword Yooyus
Getting the Yooyu

Method #1

Method #2

We recommend using the 1+3 formation, where you have a player closer to the Yooyuball at the start. Doing this formation prevents confusion as to who you are controlling when you start the game as there's typically an auto-selector for activating players closer to the Yooyuball.

When the Yooyuball appears, you want to do absolutely nothing. Simply let the other team get the ball first.

Then, before the opposing player can move forward with the ball, move forward and steal the ball from them.

This method does not just put you in posession of the ball, but rockets you forward, past most of the defenders of the opposing team. Now you have to move toward the goal to score.

We recommend using the 1+3 formation.

When the game starts, move forward towards the Yooyuball right away to get the ball first.

Keep moving forward towards the goal while you move your player up and down to dodge your opponents. Going up and down at the same time will also allow you to move at a 45 degree angle.

The 45 degree angle will be helpful when scoring. It is recommended to charge your power gague the closer you are to the goal.

Scoring the Yooyu

Method #1

Method #2

Once you get the ball, begin charging your power gague. Then, keep running towards the goal. You can line up to the top corner of the goal paint-line. The second you hit the top corner, you can release the power charge and the Yooyuball will go past the the goalie from above.

It is also possible to score at a place where the goalkeeper is not guarding the goal, like below or above the goalkeeper. When getting closer to the goal, you can release the the power charge, and the Yooyuball will fly past the goalie– where they are unable to do anything.

This method of scoring works best towards the beginning of the game. As you score more goals, the goalkeeper will become quick to react and block your kicks.

This method works best with both the Fire and Normal Yooyus.

Once you have the Yooyuball in your possession, you must keep running towards the goal. Then, pass the Yuyooball to the opposing goalkeeper.

Once the goalkeeper has the Yooyuball, stand directly in front of them and repeatedly press the spacebar/click your mouse/press steal until you have the Yooyuball in your possession. At this moment, the goalkeeper will run off to the side.

You can then quickly move in as close as you can to the goal and score with or without charging your player's power gague.

Method #3

First, quickly get the ball when the game begins. Then, quickly move your player back into your own half of the field while charging the power gauge.

Once you've done the full U-turn, be sure to shoot the ball at the bottom corner of the diamond in the middle of the field. For Normal and Fire Yooyus, you can shoot from the halfway line, and it will enter the goal. An example of other places to score the Yooyuball is by having your player stand in the shaded rectangles.

For the Snow Yooyuball, you need to be slightly closer to the goal and release your player's charged power from your opponents half of the field. To score, be sure to have your player stand in the shaded rectangles.

If done correctly, the Yooyuball should slip past the goalkeeper with ease.

Strategies for Faerie Yooyu

Method #1

Method #2

Once you've taken possession of the Yooyuball, charge your power gauge and either head upwards or downwards towards the goal. Make a sharp turn facing the post and then release the Yooyuball immediately. It will create a horseshoe effect, going around the goalkeeper to score.

Take possession of the Yooyuball and head straight towards the opponents goal. Keeping a straight line for the goal, be sure to charge your power gauge.

Once you've reached the mid-field of your opponents side, release the Yooyuball and the Faerie Yooyu will make a horseshoe effect and will score around the goalkeeper.

Strategies for Darigan Yooyu

Scoring with the Darigan Yooyu is extremely difficult as it is unknown to detect how the Yooyuball will move. It is recommended to use Goal Expansion and Freeze Opponent powerups, when available, when a Darigan Yooyuball is in play as it will increase your scoring chances.

Darigan Yooyus can move in one of any random direction.

While there are several methods of how to score with a Darigan Yooyu, there's no best possible way to determine what exactly will happen. It will take several tries to actually score.

Method #1

Method #2

Once you have possession of the Yooyuball, you can lean against the wall below your opponents goal. It will then give a chance for the Darigan Yooyuball to sail upwards towards the goal.

Once you have possession of the Yooyuball, there are three areas that you can position your player.

Your player can either face forward in the upward or downward part of their field. Or, you can have your player right in the middle, but looking backwards from the goalkeeper.

Method #3

There is a chance where the Yooyuball goes backwards. Some players allow the opponent to take possession of the Yooyuball and let them try and score in your goal.

It is a gamble, but the Yooyuball would either bounce upwards or downwards, or get kicked backwards, "accidentally" sending the ball into their goal, giving you a score.
