What is the Petpet Laboratory?
The Petpet Laboratory is a place just like the regular Secret Laboratory, except this place is for petpets only. If you have access to the petpet laboratory you can zap one of your petpets there, once a day. Of course you never know what will happen to your petpet, this page will help you get more insights in the possibilities of the Petpet Laboratory.


How do you get access to the Petpet Laboratory?
Receiving access to the Petpet Laboratory is more complicated than it sounds. In order to receive access to it, you must do two things. Firstly, you must have access to the regular Secret Laboratory. After you have collected all nine pieces of the Secret Laboratory, you must also collect the nine different 'Petpet Laboratory Map' pieces. You can see them below.



You can buy the pieces of the map separately at the shop wizard for example. Or you can buy a full lab map at the trading post. This might seem easier, but it's not always cheaper than buying the pieces separately, so you'll need to pay close attention that you don't pay too much. Unfortunately it's rather hard to buy pieces separately because neopets didn't number the pieces, so it might take some work to find the piece you're looking for.

Once you have all the Petpet Laboratory Map pieces in your inventory. You can get access by trading in your map pieces for permanent access to the Petpet Laboratory. If you decide to do this your Petpet Laboratory Map pieces will disappear forever, and you will not be able to get them back.

What does the Petpet Laboratory do?
Various things can happen to your pet, luckily you get to decide which pet you want to send in there before anything happens.

The following things can happen if you use the Lab Ray on your pet:

Your petpet's colour and species can change (into Brown Ona, White Gatow etc.) The Kookith begins wildly pushing buttons on the console, which looks to be made of cardboard and... Achyfi cans?! This can't be right! You begin formulating a plan to rescue your Petpet and run far, far away, but it's too late. The ray has already been fired... Whoa... did it actually work? Sure looks like it. Your Petpet has been transformed. Imagine that. You should come back tomorrow and try again! Your petpet's name can change (into weird preset names, for all possibilities look below) The Kookith begins wildly pushing buttons on the console, which looks to be made of cardboard and... Achyfi cans?! This can't be right! You begin formulating a plan to rescue your Petpet and run far, far away, but it's too late. The ray has already been fired... OMGROFL shall now be known as Sir Bob of Geraptiku. How nice. Okay, maybe not that nice. Lets hope you have better luck tomorrow. As you can see good or bad things can happen. Your pet could change into a lovely color, but your petpet can also disappear, leaving you with nothing. It's all random.


Petpet Laboratory only specialties:
If you use the Petpet Laboratory on your petpet, you have a small chance of receiving a laboratory only colour or species. There are no other ways to obtain these petpets, you will not be able to buy Petpet Paint Brushes to get your petpet in these colours, and there are no shops that sell these kinds of petpets. If you receive a Petpet Laboratory only species or colour, you will receive a special message.

The laboratory-only species firstly appeared in 2003 during the Mini Jelly Event. On that picture you can see all of the new species, except for Floobix and Weebly, these Lutari Island petpets were added later.


Petpet Laboratory names
It could happen that the Petpet Laboratory changes the name of your petpet. There are only a few names that your petpet can be turned into. These are:

Petpet Laboratory restrictions
Once you've started to use the laboratory on your petpet there are a few restrictions. First of all, your petpet will no longer qualify for the Petpet Protection League. This means that if your petpet's species is chosen for the Petpet Protection League, you will not win the trophy.

Second of all, you are not able to paint your petpet after it is zapped. Lets say you received a White Weewoo, but you really want a Grey Weewoo, well too bad! Because you cannot paint zapped petpets.

Thirdly, if your petpet should turn into a Krawk petpet because of the laboratory, you cannot turn him into a pet Krawk. Zapped Krawks cannot turn into regular Krawks.


Petpet Avatars
If you zap your petpet with the Petpet Laboratory, changes are he will turn into an avatar pet such as Gruslen or Snowbunny. Well luckily, you will be able to receive the avatars from zapped petpets. This means that the Petpet Laboratory can be a fairly cheap way to get all the petpet avatars. All you have to do is buy yourself a cheap petpet, and hope it will turn into an avatar petpet. This could take a long time however. Also, you have the chance that your petpet disappears. Please note that on aged petpet avatars the zapped pet should also be at least the minimum required age.

More facts about the Petpet Laboratory
If you remove your petpet from your pet after he was zapped, he will turn back into his/her original form.

This Petpet has been zapped! Removing it will cause it to revert to its original form. Current Original You should only proceed if you are sure you want your original Petpet back.

If you have zapped your petpet everyone will be able to see that you did so, there's no way to fool anyone! On your pet's lookup it will show underneath your petpet:
