General Info:
The stock market can be a great tool to earn Neopoints. It takes little effort, some knowledge, and patience. The general idea is you are investing your money into shares for a company. Your investment helps the company advance. You buy shares at a certain price, and then the price of those shares can increase or decrease depending on how that company is doing. If you know how to work the system, you can use the stock market to increase your Neopoints with great results.

The Stock Market was announced in July of 2000 and was available for testing on August 2nd. On the 24th of August in 2000, the stock market was officially open and beginning its ups and downs.

Before You Get Started - Pin Protection
Be sure to pin protect your stock as well as your bank account! Your Neopoints are easily available if you do not protect your stocks. You can add a pin here

Terms:
In order to understand the stock market, there are a few terms to go over.
  • Shares/Stock - A share or stock is a part of a company. In owning shares from a company, you are investing your Neopoints into that company. Hopefully your investment will help the company to grow.
  • Portfolio - Your portfolio lists all the stock you have invested in, what price it opened for that day, its current price, how many shares you own, and its value. You can also sell your shares on this page.
  • Ticker - A ticker is a 2-4 letter combination a company uses to identify itself. No two companies share the same ticker. (Ie: Dice-A-Roo Industries PLC.'s ticker is DROO)
  • Lot - A lot is the amount of shares you purchase in one sitting. For instance, you have purchased 1,000 shares at 15nps a share 3 days. You have 3 lots.

Rules:
TNT has regulated rules in which to control the amount you can earn/lose. By knowing these rules, you will have a better understanding of how to use the stock market to your advantage.
  • Lowest price of shares that can be purchased: 15nps a share
  • Maximum amount of shares you can purchase daily: 1,000 shares
  • Nigel's broker fee: 20nps up front when selling
  • You cannot purchase stock and sell it on the same day

Why Invest In The Stock Market?
Why should you bother with the stock market? so many strategies but when you know how to work the stock market, you can gain quite a profit. It is not something you should jump directly into, but learn about. Once you know the fundamentals, you can pick a strategy that you think will work best for you and use it to gain.

Here is an example of how much you can earn.

Example Earnings
Purchase Per Share Quantity Purchase Value Selling Per Share Selling Value Nigel's Commission Profit
15nps 5,000 75,000nps 45nps 225,000nps 20nps 149,980nps

Patience Is Key
The stock market can yield quite a profit. However, do not be too hasty. The stock market requires time and patience. If you are looking for a quick turn around - use your time in games.

Check Stock Daily
The stock market can change a lot in one day. Be sure to add checking your stock to your daily routine as well as purchasing new stock if you can.

Invest Your Savings
It is always a good idea to have a baseline of Neopoints - a number you are not willing to go under. That way you can either gain interest at your bank, or have money to reinvest in the stock market. If you invest all of your Neopoints in the stock market, all your Neopoints will be tied up at once. You won't be able to get a deal on that stamp, paint your pet, or even restock.

The turn out for stock may be slow, but it can be a large lump sum when you do gain versus bank interest is a small amount every day - IF you log on and collect it. Although it is a good idea to have a good amount of Neopoints in your bank, with the stock market you don't necessarily have to click every day to make it happen. Yes, it is good to check your stock every day. If you miss a day here and there, you are probably ok. With the bank interest if you don't collect it, you will lose out on Neopoints.

So, you are on almost every day and want to know how much to keep in your bank and how much to invest? You can use the bank interest calculator. Find out how much interest you want to make each day. That will tell you how many Neopoints to leave in your bank. Then, take the remaining Neopoints you have, or play games and start to invest.

Once you begin to earn from the stock market, reinvest it. When you earn enough, you can increase your base line for your bank to obtain more interest if you wish.

Risk Of Bankruptcy:
As a warning, stocks can go bankrupt. That is when the stocks will no longer be worth anything. You will be forced to dump the shares and continue on. This is a rare occurance, but can happen. This is why it is always a great idea to spread your stock ownership with different companies.

Go bankrupt? Here's a tissue.

When Does Stock Prices Change?
The stock market actually updates twice in each hour. Every time it hits :28 or :58 minutes past an hour, the stock price can change. This is a good thing to know when you are using the "Day Trading" method.

Portfolio Page:
Your portfolio page has a lot of information on it. It can be quite confusing to understand what is going on.

The first column shows the icon and ticker for the company you are invested in. The company ticker is a link in which will take you to the buy page with that companies ticker already in the box. Do this when you check your stocks first thing and find that you can rebuy a stock at 15nps a share you already own.

The second column shows the happenings that day - what the stock was worth at the turn of the day, how much it is worth this half hour, and how many points it's up or down from opening.

The third shows how much you own in that stock overall, and the total amount you paid for all your lots.

The fourth and final column shows the overall changes. It shows the market value for all of the shares, and what percentage difference compared to what you paid.

In the example above, one stock has a drop down to it. This can be accessed for all of the stock you own simply by clicking the small arrow next to the icon of each company. Notice how the ACFI arrow points downward, and the others point right. This view allows you to see all the lots you have, how much you paid per share, the total you paid for each lot, its price at that time per share, how much it's worth currently, and its change from when you purchased the shares. You can also see there is a box where you can fill information in. This is where you would enter how many shares to sell if the stock was ready.

Nigel the Broker
Nigel has been the stock broker for all Neopians. This well dressed Chia has a nice sporty car, thanks to his 20nps fee he charges every time any Neopian sells stock. Make sure when you are selling stock, to sell all the stock you wish at once to avoid multiple fees. Whether you sell 1,000 or 10,000 at once, you will only have the 20nps charge. Nigel has appeared in random events suggesting you invest in one of the companies. This is random, and is not TNT revealing hints on stock about to rise.

Nigel
I'm not too pricey...

How To Buy:
Head on over to the Buy page. There you will see where you can enter the ticker and the amount of shares you'd like to purchase. If you do not know the ticker, or what stock you are going to buy, underneath "ticker symbol" is a link saying "click to list." Follow that link to Company List page listing all the stocks available and what their current prices are.

For an easier route at finding stocks at 15nps a share, go to the Bargain Stock page.

If one of your stocks you already own is at 15nps a share, and you would like to purchase more of them, you can easily do that from your Portfolio page. Find the stock you own that you wish to purchase more of and click on its ticker. This will take you to the buy page with the ticker already listed in the box. Now you just have to enter the amount of shares.

When Exactly To Buy
Now that you understand how to buy, do not run off and purchase the first stock you see. The cheapest you can purchase a stock is 15nps a share. Any stock that is available that low is the perfect time to buy. Some have said to buy 15-17nps a share. However, 15nps a share is going to have the highest profit when you sell. This is assuming of course you aren't using the "High Price, High Risk" strategy.

How To Sell:
You can sell your stock on your Portfolio page. In the table, in the column "icon" there should be a picture and an arrow pointing to the right. Click that arrow. By doing so, the arrow will point downward and show each purchase you have made with that stock, how much you bought it at each purchase, and how much it's worth now. To the right of each purchase there is a blank box you can fill in. This is where you would type the amount of shares you would like to sell. Then scroll to the bottom, enter your pin and click the button "sell shares" and there you go. Enjoy your profit.

When Exactly To Sell:
Well that all depends on your patience and strategy. You can decide to sell when the Neopoints are doubled at 30nps a share (for those impatient and looking for quick results) known as the 15/30 method. In order to get the hang of the stock market, this would be a great way to start. Shows you results quicker, and increases your interest to continue investing in stock.

Otherwise, you can let the stock nest and grow. Stock has been seen over 100nps a share, and even higher! Highest when creating this guide was 598nps a share! Imagine those profits!

Never sell for a loss. The stock will eventually come back up. The stock market is all about patience, and you must not be hasty or get frustrated with low numbers. Let the stock ride itself back up.

Method 1 - 15/30/60
This method is based off of buying it the cheapest and selling it for double. It takes some patience but not as much if you waited for it to be higher. Simply purchase stocks at 15nps a share and proceed to wait until they reach 30nps a share doubling your investment. Proceed to reinvest the profit. If you are patient enough, you can wait until the stock gets to 60nps a share. If you wait until then, you are getting four times your original investment!

Below is a table showing an example of what to do each day with this method. If using 15/60 method, then of course don't sell until the stock reaches 60nps a share.

Example of 15/30/60
Day Procedure
1 Find a stock selling 15nps a share. Purchase 1,000 shares in stock A.
2 Check current stock. It went up to 18nps a share. Locate another company selling 15nps a share. Purchase 1,000 shares of stock B.
3 Check current stock. Stock A that was at 18 yesterday is now at 19nps a share. Stock B is still at 15nps a share. Purchase 1,000 shares of stock B.
4 Check current stock. Stock A is now at 24nps a share. Stock B is at 17nps a share. Purchase 1,000nps of stock C.
5 Check current stock. Stock A jumped to 30nps a share (doubled from purchased price). Sell stock A or wait and let it rise more (it could fall also). Stock B dropped to 9nps a share (don't panic, it shall come back). Stock C is 20nps a share. Purchase 1,000 shares of stock D.

Method 2 - Diversity
With the risk of bankruptcy, or low value stock, it is a good idea to have your stock spread out through multiple companies. Having 1,000 shares that were 15nps a share costs you 15,000nps versus having 10,000 shares at 15nps a share costs 150,000nps. A huge difference - and if a stock goes under, that is quite a loss.

Method 3 - All In One
Another method which has a little more risk, is to invest all in one stock. As mentioned in the Diversity method, you can lose more if the company goes bankrupt. However, if you can manage to get enough shares at 15nps a share on that same company, you can sell it all at once when it goes high. It is a longer method to collect stock of the same company, but can be a quicker sell for profit at once if the stock rises.

Method 4 - Day Trading
If you are impatient, you can consider Day Trading. This means you would buy a stock at a higher price lets say, at 425nps a share, in hopes it will increase with a higher change sometime during the day. So, you buy 1,000 shares at 425nps costing you 425,000nps. Lets say the stock goes up to 475nps a share and is now valued at 475,000nps. That is a quick gain of 49,980nps after Nigel's cut of course.

This method has its risks, however. As easily as it can go up in value, it can also decrease. You might be stuck at holding onto the stock for quite some time to just break even or profit from it. This is definitely a strategy you want to refresh every half hour for and be online until you have sold all the stock you invested in that high. It wouldn't be a good idea to purchase that high and leave for the weekend.

Starting Out With Low Neopoints:
All this talk about spending 15,000nps a day can seem quite costly to those starting out such as new players, those who don't have time to game much, or so forth. You do not have to buy 1,000 shares a day - it's your maximum. When you are starting out, consider purchasing 500 shares which would only cost 7,500nps a day. You can even consider 250 shares costing 3,750nps a day. However, once your goal is set on the avatar, buying 1,000 shares a day is the fastest way to get there. Also, the less shares you have, when they go up, your profit would not be as high if you have fewer shares purchased at the minimum 15nps a share. If you are low on Neopoints or just starting out, buying fewer shares for less Neopoints, you can build up your savings to move on to higher amounts of stock to increase your profits.

Stock Market Myths
There hasn't been a bankruptcy since 2004, it is no longer possible because shares don't go under 6nps a share.
TNT has stated in the Neopian Times that it can happen. It is a very rare occurance, but can happen.

The stocks are directly influenced by the neopian shops. Lets all get together and buy items from them to increase stock value.
Sorry. The stock has nothing to do with shops. It is all just random.

If a bunch of Neopians rush and buy stock all at once together, the price of the stock will increase quickly.
TNT of course wouldn't make that possible. It is random and it doesn't matter how many people are purchasing the stock.

Message Board
Neopets has a Stock Message Board where you can talk stock with others. You can talk strategy, wait out your "Day Trading", cry about a loss together, or brag about a gain.

Avatar Reward
If you watch the highest price stock in the market compared to how many Neopoints you have invested, you can claim the avatar a lot quicker. Say you have been really good and bought 1,000 shares at 15nps each and have a total of 525,000nps invested (thats 35 different days of purchasing). When making this guide, the highest was at 598nps a share. You would only have to purchase 1,000 shares at the price of 598nps a share to have over 1 million Neopoints invested. However, purchasing stock that high goes against this guide, and all thoughts of buy low sell high. You cannot turn around and resell what you purchased that day.

If you wait until 11:45pm NST (neopet standard time) you can purchase those shares. Then, at the turn of the day, any time after 12am NST, you can sell the shares and minimize any loss. That cuts your time in HALF for waiting to get the avatar buying so low.

If this were the case, it took 36 different days of buying stock. If you purchased 1,000 shares at 15nps each until you received the avatar, that would be 67 days worth. By then your other stocks might of been nice enough to sell, then dropped horribly. This will minimize your time waiting for the avatar, any loss, and allow you to sell your stock hopefully when it is ready to sell.

Editorial Questions

Hey, TNT! I was buying stocks in the stock market when I noticed some of the companies (such as BOOM and NEGG) were completely bankrupt, with their stock values at zero. Curious, I looked through the old Editorials and found one that said if a company goes bankrupt, then its stocks will be worthless forever! Could this still happen to my stocks? I don't want to lose my hard-earned Neopoints. :( ~phdinmagic

O.O *watches another Editorial writer get dragged off* Well then... uhh, where were we? Ahem, to answer your question: unfortunately, that is one of the risks of the Neopian Stock Market. D:

Question #7,281, archived from Editorial Issue 489 · Published 2011-04-08

Alright, TNT. Kacheek and Sons Landscaping has had their fun at the top of the stock market for quite some time now, and all of us investors are tired of kicking ourselves in the shins daily for selling way too early. Could you give another stock a chance to rise to the top so that we can start bringing in some revenue again? Our shins would appreciate it. ~buildabearnamedkilo

/jawdrop *_* Man, there are some of us here that wish we'd invested in that, too! We don't manually control the Stock Market, so... yeah, wow. Guess we'll just wait and see what happens.

Question #7,242, archived from Editorial Issue 486 · Published 2011-03-18

Why hello there, TNT! How are you guys doing today? Oh, you're excited to answer my question? That's splendid! I'll get on with it, then! A lot of us Stock Market players feel as though we are being a little neglected. :( Where is our avatar? *hands out muffins* Please? ~melayeti14

Actually, we've been meaning to release one! Thanks for the reminder. We'll make a note to schedule it relatively soon.

Question #6,295, archived from Editorial Issue 413 · Published 2009-10-09

It seems inflation is a problem on this site and that users are becoming increasingly frustrated with the growing costs of some of the more expensive paint brushes. I was wondering why the payout for games cannot be increased, maybe even if for a little while, to help remedy this? For example, instead of the maximum being 1,000 NP per game played, it could be raised to 5,000 NP. ~teratogen

Though it may seem counterintuitive, creating more Neopoints and putting them into the economy would only make the situation worse. Games are where most Neopoints are created, and inflation is being caused by there being too much NP floating around. If solely playing games isn't fetching the Neopoints you need to buy your dream Neohome, we suggest exploring more areas of the site where Neopoints can be made, such as the Neopian Stock Market, restocking, or using your shop. :)

Question #6,164, archived from Editorial Issue 404 · Published 2009-08-07

Have you ever considered making a High Score Table for the Neopian Stock Market? That would be awesome! (Thanks for 8 years of fun, by the way!) ~cry884

It's a very nice thought, but we don't think that everyone with a lot of NP invested in the Stock Market would want it publicly broadcasted on a High Score Table. A lot of people prefer to be private about just how many Neopoints they have. (Thanks for hanging with us for so many years!)

Question #6,175, archived from Editorial Issue 404 · Published 2009-08-07

Hello, I have some stocks at the Neopian stock market and I've always wondered: do the stock prices change randomly, or do certain things influence them? ~hantsik

Years ago user interaction had an effect on the stock market, but that was stopped after guilds started getting together to manipulate it. These days it's entirely random.

Question #5,392, archived from Editorial Issue 349 · Published 2008-06-27

Personally, I really like the new layout and everything. Yes, it took some getting used to; I had a bit of trouble finding some things, but most have been found by now. One thing I really did like about the old layout, though, was the link to the Stock Market on the home page. I have remedied the difficulty in finding the Stock Market (going to games, searching for Stock Market) by adding it to my favourite games. But, do you think you could put a link to it on the home page again? Please? ~igloolik

Way ahead of you! If you check out the main page (you can get there quickly by clicking the Neopets logo in the upper left hand corner) you'll notice that Neodaq Index status is now a link! We noticed a lot of people having difficulty getting to that area, so we decided to make your Neo-life a bit easier in that regard and changed it a couple days ago. :) You can also get to the Stock Market (and the Battledome) via the Games Room.

Umm... could I get one of those fancy redraws? PLEASE?
NO! BAD NIGEL!

Question #4,480, archived from Editorial Issue 290 · Published 2007-05-04

I was just wondering, are you allowed to use the Stockmarket on more than one account, or is it just like playing games? ~ 22billie22

The stock market is considered a game. Since you are only allowed a limited number of shares each day, it's very important that you don't play the stock market in multiple accounts to try and circumvent this limit. This would unbalance things, and would be considered cheating just like playing any other game on your alternate account would be.

Sorry, I can't talk now. BUY BUY BUY SELL SELL SELL

Question #3,520, archived from Editorial Issue 222 · Published 2006-01-06

I think it might be interesting if there was a huge stock market crash, like the one in 1929. The stock market would go down and the bank would run out of money and there would be total CHAOS as everyone loses their money... But that's just my opinion... And I think it would be funny (for me anyway)... - willman93

Oooh that is such a nasty idea hehe. I think a lot of people would be very distressed if anything like that happened, but who knows... The Stock Market has been a little too stable recently...

Question #2,929, archived from Editorial Issue 176 · Published 2005-02-04

I'm getting bored of the same old stocks, same old things... Add some new stocks!!! - kikik312

Wow, it has been a long while since we added anything to the Stock Market. New companies should be expected to go on sale shortly.

Question #2,912, archived from Editorial Issue 174 · Published 2005-01-21

I love playing the stock market cause it's fun and reaps lots of profits (if you play it right). I consider myself a stock market whiz and I was wondering if you could release some stock market avatars or shopkeepers? - Lgoody16

Of course, we do tend to leave the Stock Market to run by itself, but we will add some more stockmarket related things soon.

Question #2,814, archived from Editorial Issue 168 · Published 2004-12-02

Can you pleeeeeaaassssssseeeeee increase the number of maximum shares you can buy a day to 2000 or maybe even 3000? Thanks :) - Pokeruby25

It has been a while since we have added anything to the Stock Market, I don't see why not!

Question #2,392, archived from Editorial Issue 140 · Published 2004-05-15

Does the Neopian Stock Market run 24 hours, or between certain hours? I check my stocks a couple times a day, and want to know if I'm completely wasting my time... - Sheforcedme64

You are quite correct to check all the time. The Neopian Stock Market is open around the clock, so you never know when those stocks are going to sky rocket.

Question #2,148, archived from Editorial Issue 128 · Published 2004-02-13

Do bankrupt companies ever go back up in the stock market? - Lenorinel_sci

Nope, once they declare bancruptcy thats it, they are out of the stock market forever.

Question #1,699, archived from Editorial Issue 103 · Published 2003-08-09

I read a somewhere you said cars don't exist in Neopia and Neopets don't drive but in the haunted woods in the haunted house, that choose your own adventure game, there is a car, and a Neopet is driving it. Also in a game I played once I remember there was also a car, um... so I'm confused now. Can you make me not confused anymore?

Ok, cars don't exist in Neopia. Nor do laptops, computers or anything super high-tech (except in the Space Station). Some of our games are just jokes (such as the stock market) and have little parody images like Nigel in his car. These games are seperate from the fantasy world that is Neopia, they are just on the site for fun. (By the way the Quiggle in a car for the Mcdonald's drive through is just a sponsor thing. The drive thru will not ever be featured in cartoons, computer games, books, etc. because it doesn't really exist in Neopia)
